MAKEDONIA VELVENTO
Velvento, a small town of 4,000 residents, is a peaceful community in the Prefecture of Kozani. The historical center, the narrow streets, the old and modern houses, the lush yards, the small squares and beautiful places, all form a colorful mosaic in the middle of small green plains full with fruit and fresh water. Furthermore, these elements are bonded with a powerful tradition and a simple way of living. Nowadays, Velvento and the whole area around it, give the visitor a unique chance to enjoy and relax near to nature with all the comforts of a small town.
The habitation in the area of Velvento at the foothills of Pieria, has a long history and tradition. The traces of ancient settlements of prehistoric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times although they are lost in the lush vegetation, they show that the population of the wider Velvendos region continues and it is lost in the depth of time.
Nowdays the habitants are mostly farmers and Velvento is famous for it's products ( wines , peaches...)

The oral tradition and legends give their own version of the theme , the origin , the name of Velvento and the first residents. An old tale tells that once Artemis, goddess of the hunt, went there in order to hunt with Panoras Nymphs. One of them whose name wasVendo, was so charmed from the dreamy beauty of the landscape that she decided to stay there to hunt in deep-shaded forests. Then she threw arrows and those entrenched the most fertile piece of land. When Latins arrived some time they thought the sign was a message from god and they built their village there. They named it Velvendo from the words Veli ( which means arrows) and Vendo.
